How is the Bose Soundbar 550 different from the Bose Soundbar 900?

Both products are great at delivering an immersive sound experience — for both their size and at their price. The main differences are related to the acoustic performance. While both provide an immersive experience, sound great, and have similar feature sets (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, AirPlay2, etc. …), the Soundbar 900 will play louder and deeper than the Soundbar 550 and also uses PhaseGuide technology, which provides an even more immersive experience. Soundbar 550 has 5 speakers in total, while the Soundbar 900 has 9 speakers in total. The Bose Soundbar 900 also includes ADAPTiQ audio calibration technology, which adjusts the sound of the soundbar to best fit your room, no matter the shape or furnishings. The Bose Soundbar 550 offers great dialogue intelligibility, spacious sound, but it doesn’t come with ADAPTiQ. Also, with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant built-in, the Smart Soundbar 900 gets you instant voice access to information or music.

How is the Bose Soundbar 550 different from the Bose TV Speaker?

The Bose TV Speaker is designed primarily to provide better TV sound with an emphasis on dialogue. It greatly improves your TV sound, helps with dialogue intelligibility, and includes Bluetooth. But the Bose TV Speaker does not include TrueSpace™ decoding for Dolby Atmos, so it cannot provide any real immersive experiences. It provides a wide soundstage (a lot wider than the bar itself) and brings your movies and music to life by immersing you in the sound. In addition to Dolby Atmos and TrueSpace™ decoding, the Bose Soundbar 550 also offers great dialogue intelligibility and plays louder and lower than the Bose TV Speaker. It also offers Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Chromecast built-in, and SimpleSync™ functionality™, and works with the Bose Music app.

How is the Bose Soundbar 550 different from the Bose Smart Soundbar 400?

The Smart Soundbar 400 includes “smart” features like microphones and voice control capabilities. The Bose Soundbar 550 does not include those features, so we do not include the term “smart” in the name to make it clearer to customers what each product can and cannot do.

What’s included with the Bose Soundbar 550?

The Bose Soundbar 550 comes with a one-piece soundbar, a basic IR remote control, an optical cable, HDMI® cable, Quick start guide and power cord. The Owner’s Guide is available online.

On the remote: Like all IR remote controls, line-of-sight is required between the remote and the soundbar. A single coin cell (CR2032 or DL2032) battery comes installed in the remote control. The remote is not a universal remote control so it cannot be programmed to control other devices.

What inputs/outputs does the Bose Soundbar 550 have?

HDMI eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel)

Optical input

Power

3.5 mm connector for hard wiring a bass module (optional)

3.5 mm connector for hard wiring an IR blaster (optional — contact Bose Customer Service)

Micro-USB (Service only. No Customer functionality)

What are the approximate dimensions of the Bose Soundbar 550?

The soundbar is measures approximately 27.5” long x 4.3" wide x 2.3" high (69.5 cm long x 10.3 cm wide x 5.6 cm high)

What color is available for the Bose Soundbar 550?

Black.

PRODUCT TECHNOLOGY & PERFORMANCE

What is Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Atmos is a technology that allows artists and content creators to place each voice, instrument, and sound in its own space, creating a spatial experience with realistic overhead effects.

Dolby Atmos isn't a specific soundtrack; instead it is metadata, or information about sound, that is used to control what speakers are reproducing certain sounds. Instead of assigning sound to a channel, Atmos lets filmmakers assign sound to a place. The best example is when a helicopter flies overhead in a movie:

Without Atmos information, the sound of the helicopter is embedded in one or many of the surround sound channels together with all of the other sounds

With Atmos information, the helicopter is treated as its own discrete object, and an Atmos receiver can separate the helicopter sound from the background sounds — helping to get a much more immersive sound experience

What is Bose TrueSpace™ technology?

Proprietary Bose TrueSpace™ spatial processing intelligently analyzes signals other than Dolby Atmos, like stereo or 5.1, and upmixes them to create an immersive multi-channel sound experience with a sense of height in the soundscape. The result? Enveloping immersive sound no matter what you watch.

Atmos is growing in importance with soundbars, as a feature that resellers recommend and customers want. However, for Atmos to work, every single ingredient in the Home Theater set up has to support Atmos:

The content: Physical, downloaded, or streamed, the content has to be encoded with Dolby Atmos. To date, the amount of content that is truly Atmos-encoded is still somewhat limited (though growing)

The hardware: What you're playing your content on (like your TV) has to be able to decode Atmos or pass it along to a Dolby Atmos-capable sound system without altering it

The content provider/app: The provider/source you're using to watch content (like Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Prime Video) must be capable of delivering Atmos data to your hardware device. Example: a Netflix Premium subscription offers Atmos, a non-premium doesn't

The speaker system: The A/V receiver, soundbar, or TV (whatever the device you're using to hear audio) must support Dolby Atmos

Of course, with TrueSpace™, the customer does not need to worry about any of this because the technology will take any content — regardless of how it was encoded or the customer’s equipment — and deliver that Atmos-like experience.

What is HDMI eARC?

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) = A digital interface for audio and video that provides a single-cable solution for home theater and consumer electronics equipment such as TVs, Blu-ray/DVD players and set-top boxes. Introduced in 2002, one HDMI cable took the place of nine different analog audio and video cables.

HDMI ARC removes the need for an optical cable and allows you to send audio ‘downstream’ from a compatible HDMI socket on your TV to a compatible HDMI ARC socket on a soundbar or A/V receiver

HDMI eARC stands for enhanced Audio Return Channel, and is the next generation of ARC. The main benefit of eARC is a big boost in bandwidth and speed. This allows you to send higher-quality audio from your TV to a soundbar or A/V receiver. Bandwidth represents the range of frequencies or amount of data that is being transferred at a time. You can picture it as a water pipe that can only transport a limited amount of water at a time, depending on the diameter of the pipe. Higher bandwidth translates into a higher amount of data that can be transferred (a larger pipe). Higher bandwidth also means that digital audio signal doesn’t have to be compressed and is much more detailed, rich and vibrant. As a result, with an eARC channel, you can enjoy the depth of movie-theatre-quality surround sound via formats such as Dolby Atmos.

How many speakers are in the Soundbar 550?

The Soundbar 550 has two upfiring transducers and two racetrack transducers at the ends of the soundbar, plus a center tweeter for dialogue. All these work together along with proprietary Bose DSP (Digital Signal Processing) to deliver an immersive experience.

With the Bose Soundbar 550, can I use my voice to control the other A/V equipment connected to my TV or search for content?

No.

What is SimpleSync™ technology?

SimpleSync™ is a proprietary Bose technology that allows you to pair a Bose Soundbar 550 or 850 with select Bose speakers or headphones using Bluetooth. https://www.bose.com/en_us/support/article/using-groups.html

The Bose soundbar acts as the “parent” device, or the initial source of the content. Through the Bose Music app you can then group your soundbar with a compatible Bose Bluetooth speaker or Bose Bluetooth headphone by establishing a Bluetooth connection from the soundbar to the Bluetooth device. Your two products must remain within typical Bluetooth wireless range (30 feet) of each other to stay connected. Walls and construction materials can affect reception at times.

What is multi-room or whole home grouping?

Multi-room grouping is the grouping of two or more Wi-Fi-enabled Bose speakers and/or soundbars, via the Bose Music app. Add another Bose Wi-Fi-enabled speaker/soundbar to your home anytime to sync with the Soundbar 550 and hear the same content everywhere, or different content in different rooms.

However, you cannot play synchronized multi-room content with older Bose SoundTouch products or products from other manufacturers using the Bose Music app. This type of cross-speaker streaming is only available through Apple AirPlay 2.

What content can I listen to on the Soundbar 550?

You can listen to different types of content in different ways:

TV sound. Connect the soundbar directly to your TV via the HDMI or optical cable

Bose Music app. The Bose Music app is a central place to browse, play, and manage integrated music services. Once music has been initiated from the Bose Music app, the presence of the mobile device is no longer needed for music playback, unlike with Bluetooth speakers. The Bose Music app works on phones and tablets running iOS (version 10.3.3 and above) or Android (version 5.1 and above).

Music streaming services. Whether or not they are integrated in the Bose Music app, you can stream music from a music streaming service, using Chromecast built-in, Apple AirPlay 2, or Spotify Connect

Bluetooth. Pair your mobile device with your Soundbar 550 through Bluetooth to listen to content from your mobile device. Press and hold the Bluetooth source button on the remote for several seconds. Ensure your mobile device is in pairing mode and select the Bose Soundbar 550 from the list. You can also pair your mobile device to the soundbar using the Bose Music app.

Does the Bose Soundbar 550 have 4K pass-through capability?

No. It only handles the audio output from the TV, no external video goes through the soundbar.

Does the Bose Soundbar 550 have Wi-Fi built in?

Yes. The soundbar uses the 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard.

Does the Bose Soundbar 550 have Bluetooth technology built in?

Yes. Bluetooth technology allows you to stream audio from any source (like YouTube) directly to the soundbar. And when your friends visit, they can simply connect via Bluetooth and easily stream their content, too.

Do the Bose Soundbar 550 have ethernet built in?

No. You cannot connect an ethernet cable to the soundbar, it only connects over Wi-Fi.

SETUP & INSTALLATION

How does the Bose Soundbar 550 connect to my TV?

The simplest way to connect the Bose Soundbar is via the supplied HDMI or optical cable directly to your TV. If your TV has an HDMI-ARC or HDMI-eARC connection, you should use that connection. If your TV does not have an HDMI connection, then you should connect the soundbar to the TV using the optical cable.

How do I setup my soundbar?

The first step for setup is to download the Bose Music app for Apple or Android. From there, the app guides you through connecting the product to Wi-Fi, and setting up music services. The Bose Music app also guides the user through rear speaker and/or bass module pairing (if applicable).

Can the Bose Soundbar 550 be mounted to the wall?

Yes. You can use the optional Bose Soundbar Wall Bracket to mount the soundbar flush to the wall. https://www.bose.com/en_us/products/speakers/speaker_accessories/bose-soundbar-wall-bracket.html#v=bose_soundbar_wall_bracket_black

What placement guidelines should be considered to ensure optimal audio performance from the Bose Soundbar 550?

The soundbar will sound great in almost any environment. The Bose Soundbar 550 uses the reflective surfaces of the room to deliver a spacious home theater experience. To ensure optimal audio performance, the soundbar should be placed equidistant from each side wall and directly in the front-center of the TV. No objects should be placed in front of the soundbar, nor should it be placed recessed inside a cabinet, as this would result in a limited soundstage. Also, nothing should be placed directly on either side of the soundbar since there are side-firing transducers located on either end. Similarly, nothing should be placed on the top grille since that would obstruct the upfiring transducers.

What steps should I take to avoid wireless interference?

For best wireless performance, be sure to keep the Bose Soundbar 550 at least 2 ft. away from other wireless devices.

Can source devices, such as a cable box, iPod, gaming system, etc., be connected directly to the Bose Soundbar 550? Does the soundbar have HDMI pass-through capability?

No. All sources must be connected to the TV and then a single connection (via the HDMI or optical cable) must be made from the TV to the soundbar.

Does the Bose Soundbar 550 include the Bose ADAPTiQ audio calibration system?

No. ADAPTiQ is not included in this soundbar. But we do include the Wall EQ setting in the Bose Music app to allow for a special EQ to be applied when the soundbar is mounted to the wall.

Can I use a third-party universal remote control with the Bose Soundbar 550?

Yes. The soundbar can be controlled by third-party remote controls that include the set of widely published Bose IR codes.

Can I control other devices with the Bose Soundbar 550 remote control?

The soundbar may be able to control connected devices (TV, Blu-ray Disc™ player, game console etc.) over HDMI-CEC. This allows you to turn on other devices and operate them with the soundbar remote without any programming. It also enables one-touch access to entertainment, enabling you to turn on multiple devices and select an input with one button press. However, not all devices respond to these commands. In particular, some cable and satellite boxes may not respond to HDMI-CEC commands.

Can I control the bass and treble?

Yes. Both can be controlled in the Bose Music app.

Can I set presets on the Bose Soundbar 550?

Yes. You can set presets in the Bose Music app.

Do I need a separate receiver with the Bose Soundbar 550?

No. The system connects directly to your TV.

Is the Bose Soundbar 550 compatible with HDCP 2.2?

No. HDCP 2.2 is only necessary for rendering or passing through high bandwidth video (like 4K). Since the soundbar does not pass-through any video, it does not need HDCP2.2.

Can I connect an audio-only source to the Bose Soundbar 550?

Yes.

Does the Bose Soundbar 550 have a headphone output?

No. However, using Bose SimpleSync™ technology, you can wirelessly pair the soundbar with compatible Bose headphones for synchronized sound with separate volume levels — which means you can lower or mute your soundbar while keeping your headphones louder. This connection is restricted to one soundbar and one pair of headphones at one time. For a list of compatible products please visit: https://www.bose.com/en_us/support/article/using-groups.html

Does the Bose Soundbar 550 have NFC technology for Bluetooth pairing?

No.

What accessory speakers are available for the Bose Soundbar 550?

If you want to add deeper bass to your soundbar, you can add on the optional wireless Bose Bass Module 700 or Bass Module 500. If you want to have a more immersive surround sound experience, you can add the optional wireless Bose Surround Speakers 700 or Bose Surround Speakers. Add a bass module and surround speakers if you want the full 5.1 experience.

Can you mix and match the wireless bass modules and soundbars?

Yes. The Bose Soundbar 550 and the Bose Bass Module 700 and Bose Bass Module 500 all use the same wireless protocols and can be mixed and matched. However, the design language and materials of the Bass Module 500 looks more complementary with the Soundbar 550.

Can I connect two wireless bass modules to my soundbar?

Yes. If you desire even more bass, you can wirelessly connect two bass modules to your Bose Soundbar 550. But you can only connect two of the same bass modules. In other words, you must connect two Bose Bass Module 700 units or Bose Bass Module 500 units to a single soundbar. You cannot connect one Bose Bass Module 700 and one Bose Bass Module 500 to a single soundbar.

How do I wirelessly connect the optional Bose Bass Module and/or Surround Speakers?

The optional accessory speakers and bass modules are paired via the Bose Music app during the initial product setup. You will be prompted to add your accessory speakers after you download the Bose Music app and start the setup process. If you did not add a bass module or speakers during the initial setup process (or if you purchase them later) you can go into the settings menu for your soundbar in the Bose Music app and add them at any time.

How do I update the product software?

The product system software will be updated automatically as long as the soundbar is connected to a wi-fi network.

What is the range of the wireless link between the Bose Soundbar 550 and the Bose Bass Module 700 and Bose Bass Module 500?

The Bose Bass Module 700 and Bass Module 500 are intended for use in the same room as the Bose Soundbars and have a range of about 30 ft. We recommend placing the Bose Bass Module 700 and Bose Bass Module 500 somewhere in the front of the room along the same wall as the TV and soundbar for optimum sound quality.

Can the Bose Bass Module 700 and Bose Bass Module 500 be wired?

Yes. If for some reason a wired connection is preferred, the Bose Bass Module 700 and Bose Bass Module 500 and Bose Soundbar 550 can be hardwired together using the Bose Bass Module Connection Cable or a standard 3.5 mm stereo audio cable.

What placement guidelines should be considered to ensure optimal audio performance of the Bose Bass Module 700 and Bose Bass Module 500?

For best sound quality, the Bose Bass Module 700 and Bose Bass Module 500 should be placed on the floor against the same wall as the television and soundbar, with an electrical outlet nearby for the power cord. The bass module should not be placed on a shelf or table. For more bass, the bass module should be placed closer to walls and corners. For less bass, the bass module should be pulled away from walls and corners.

OPTIONAL BOSE SURROUND SPEAKERs 700 and Surround Speakers

What are the differences between Bose Surround Speakers and Bose Surround Speakers 700?

The main difference between the Bose Surround Speakers and the Bose Surround Speakers 700 are the two satellite speaker cubes. The two OmniJewel satellite cubes that come with the Bose Surround Speakers 700 are the smallest, most spacious cubes we've ever made. They are made from a single piece of extruded aluminum and project sound truly in 360 degrees. The Bose Surround Speakers come with two Virtually Invisible® satellite speakers that stand less than 4” tall.

Are the Bose Surround Speakers and Surround speakers 700 wireless?

Yes. The Bose Surround Speakers 700 connect wirelessly to the Bose Soundbars — so no wires are required from the front of the room to the rear. But the Bose Surround Speakers 700 do require electrical power to power the wireless receiver and there is speaker wire connecting the wireless receiver to the speaker itself.

Can the Bose Surround Speakers and Surround Speakers 700 be wired to the Bose Soundbars?

No. The Bose Surround Speakers 700 can only be connected wirelessly.

What is the range of the wireless link between the Bose Soundbar 550 and the Bose Surround Speakers 700 and Bose Surround Speakers?

The Bose Surround Speakers and Surround Speakers 700 are intended for use in the same room as the Bose Soundbars and have a range of about 30 ft.

What placement guidelines should be considered to ensure optimal audio performance of the Bose Surround Speakers and Surround Speakers 700?

We recommend placing the speakers behind the main listening area — one on the left side and one on the right of the room — for optimum sound quality.

What accessories are available for Bose Surround Speakers 700?

Bose® OmniJewel™ wall bracket

Bose® OmniJewel™ floor stand with matching real glass base

Bose® OmniJewel™ ceiling bracket

Bose® OmniJewel™ table stand with matching real glass base
